Smarter Thermostat Schedules for November Furnace Use

Smarter Thermostat Schedules for November Furnace Use

As November brings more furnace use to Pittsburgh homes, your thermostat schedule deserves a second look. Settings that worked during mild fall weather may no longer match your comfort needs or daily routine. For homes heated by a furnace, a modest temperature setback while you sleep or spend several hours away can help reduce heating demand.

Start with a temperature that feels comfortable when you are home, then try lowering it a few degrees during those longer stretches. A homeowner in Carnegie with a regular work schedule might program a daytime setback and schedule the return to the occupied setting before arriving home. Keep the adjustment small at first, and account for children, older adults, pets, or anyone with temperature-sensitive health needs.

Lowering the indoor temperature reduces the rate at which your home loses heat to the outdoors. With a typical furnace, reheating afterward generally does not erase the energy saved during a sufficiently long setback, although actual savings depend on the house, weather, and schedule. Turning the thermostat far above your desired temperature usually will not warm the house faster; set the temperature you actually want.

Give your furnace enough time to bring the house back to a comfortable temperature, especially as outdoor temperatures drop. If your mornings in Wexford feel chilly after an overnight setback, try starting the scheduled warm-up earlier rather than raising the target temperature. Some thermostats offer adaptive recovery, which learns when to begin heating so the home reaches the selected temperature at the scheduled time.

The right schedule also depends on your heating equipment. Heat pumps can respond differently to large setbacks, sometimes engaging electric auxiliary heat during recovery, while radiant floors may take longer to respond to temperature changes. Before using aggressive setbacks or installing a smart thermostat, confirm that the controls and settings are appropriate for your system.
